Weingut Hermann Moser is run by Martin and his wife Carmen Moser, the 26th generation of the family producing wine from the family vineyards. The estate is nearly 400 years old and is located in the village of Rohrendorf in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The vineyards cover 19 hectares and are the best vineyards from Rohrendorf. 85% of the vineyards is planted with white varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller and Pinot Blanc, the remainder with Zweigelt.

Martin is a founding member of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich association (Traditional Austrian Wineries Association). The association was founded in 1992 and is composed of 23 growers who have together created a single level classification of 52 of their best single vineyards in the four Danube regions; namely, Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental and Wagram.

Wines from a vineyard with such status bear the ‘Erste Lage’ (Premier Cru) logo on the label alongside the vineyard name. The aim of the classification is to identify the best vineyard sites that illustrate the typicity of the terroir and unique characteristics of the wine itself. The purpose is to identify the diverse soils and microclimates and understand how together they affect each wine varietal. Members also adhere to the association’s philosophy whereby ‘members regard it as their obligation to express the characteristics of their areas, soils, climate, varieties and their cellars in their wines.’ The Ried Gebling vineyard at Weingut Hermann Moser bears such qualification and it is said to be one of the most unique types of loess soil in Europe. The name Gebling originates from ‘Gelb-ling’ (yellowish) and refers to the unique ochre color of the soil from this vineyard. The Gebling terraces, located right behind the cellar, are said to produce exceptionally spicy Grüner Veltliners.  Martin works in close collaboration with his land and uses no chemical treatments in the vineyard or cellar.

The Wines

The vineyard makes the wine, not the winemaker
— Martin Moser

Martin acts as his own cellarmaster, and his style is to drive fresh fruitiness that retain a lively drinkability even at higher ripeness and alcohol levels. Martin’s philosophy is to produce natural wines that are enjoyable to drink young but also age beautifully. Uniquely, Martin holds back 10% of each wine for a decade before release. These reserve wines are released at the same price as the current vintage releases, making them a highlight for connoisseurs of older wines and for those that appreciate the vertical comparison.
