Shilda is a beautiful village dating to the 14th Century located on the foot of the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountain range, facing south into the valley of the Alazani River, on the northern flank of the Kakheti wine region, in the Kindsmarauli Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The moderate climate and diversity of the mineral rich soil create a series of unique terroirs allowing multiple grape varieties to thrive here.
The Shilda Winery, a family winery, is the perfect blend of tradition with modernity. The ultramodern winery constructed in 2015 is packed to the brim with the latest French and Italian winemaking technology, brought to bear on the ancient grape varieties and varied terroirs of the Kakheti region.
The Wines
Shilda makes an astonishing variety of wines, some designated by varietal, some designated by PDO. At present, we represent their Saperavi varietal wine. Others will follow.
The labels of Shilda wines feature the landscape paintings of famed Georgian artist David Kakabadze (1889-1952).
Saperavi: Fermented and aged without use of oak, this wine is a dark ruby color, bright and fresh with intense berry fruit. Lush and soft with gentle tannins and a lingering berry aftertaste. Great with roast pork, turkey or duck, or just for a glass of big juicy red.
Saperavi Mukuzani: from the Mukuzni micro-zone within Kakheti, this wine is oak-aged for several months and develops greater complexity and a nice finish of berry and dusky tannins.
